The mission of the Foundation for Professional Training, Inc. (FPTI) Philippines (one of Reledev’s overseas partners) is to contribute to the efforts of nation-building by empowering women of all walks of life – especially from the less privileged sectors – through development education, skills training, and character-building founded on values of life and work. FPTI believes in the following core values:
- Recognition of the dignity of the person as the sustainable foundation for development.
- Development education as a lasting solution to overcome the negative effects of poverty: the lack of skills, opportunities for employment, lack of self-esteem and self-reliance, lack of access to social integration.
- Continuing professional training to ensure competent service.
- Active participation of women in various aspects of development.
- Good governance and responsible partnership with stakeholders to enhance effectiveness of development efforts.
Heart Pacaña, Entertainment Department Officer at Grandeur of the Seas Caribbean Cruise shares with us her positive experience from her studies at The Banilad Center for Professional Development and her professional experiences working in the hospitality and tourism industry.
I am the eldest in a family of five. My mother is a widow who works at a government office taking care of abandoned children. She also takes care of the domestic tasks at home. We live in Lapu-lapu City, Mactan. My mother got widowed at a young age. In order to support us during the early years she would sell food items early in the morning and come back home to give us our allowance for the day. We would study under the street lamp since we had no provisions at home. Thankfully, my siblings and I would get good grades. I got to know BCPD through a family friend who introduced the school to us. She highlighted immediate employment after school which was what our family needed at that time. I took the exam, passed and enrolled.
I did my on the job training in O Georg and Plantation Bay Resort and Spa, respectively. After graduation, I immediately worked in the pastry section of Café Georg, Vanille, Waterfront Hotel and Casino Lahug and Tablea. After three years of work experience in Cebu, I tried applying for a position on the cruise ship. I was accepted.
My first assignment was in the Caribbean Islands and the Bahamas. My positive and cheerful disposition in life gave me the ‘Smiley of the Month’ and ‘Employee of the Month’ awards several times. These citations were given with a cash prize. This has given me a boost in my professional life.
I presently work as an Officer in the Entertainment Department in a Caribbean cruise line named Grandeur of the Seas. I thank BCPD for the help it has given to me and our family. The Banilad Center for Professional Development will be forever etched in our hearts.
