At the heart of the Foundation for Professional Training, Inc. (FPTI) Philippines lies their mission to contribute to the efforts of nation-building by empowering women of all walks of life, in particular the less privileged sectors – through development education, skills training, and character-building founded on values of life and work.
Nova Pacaña achieved success with her studies and training at The Banilad Center for Professional Development and shares her journey with us.
“BCPD never fails to let us feel how special we are. They gave us mentors to whom we can share our problems and difficulties. Because of BCPD we have experienced so many things that we will definitely treasure for the rest of our lives.” – Nova Pacaña, Service Associate Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa
My father died when I was seven years old. He left us with our mum whom at that time just gave birth to the youngest in the family. He left us too early. Even though papa died we were still blessed to have mama who would always find a way to let us feel that nothing will change when in fact it really did. We used to sell street foods such as tempura, ngohiong and fish balls in the school during week days. Every Sunday, my older brother would sell toys in the church. My mum would also clean the church’s comfort room and would get paid for it. She needed to do this to provide for our daily needs.
I never thought that I would have the chance to study after high school as we did not have the funds. Thanks to our family friend, Ms. Ann Tisoy; she opened the door for us by introducing The Banilad Center for Professional Development (BCPD). Because of the school, I got the chance to work in world class hotels.
BCPD also imparted to us knowledge not only on how to become good in all things that we are doing but also on how to remain grateful for all the blessings received no matter how hard and challenging life may seem. BCPD never fails to let us feel how special we are. They gave us mentors to whom we can share our problems and difficulties. Because of BCPD we have experienced so many things that we will definitely treasure for the rest of our lives.
I did my on-the-job training at the Cowrie Cove in Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa. After graduation, I was hired as Telephone Operator in the same hotel. I also worked at the J Park Island Resort and Waterpark as Front Office Clerk for two months. When my contract ended, I was offered a scholarship to study Tourism Management. I tried it but stopped because I was rehired by Shangri-La. The Assistant Manager of Tides was impressed with my work performance as I was able to entertain guests well. I have received Customer Delight awards from the hotel several times. At present, I am a Service Associate at Tides Restaurant – Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.
All of these achievement would never be possible if not for the people behind our success. We thank BCPD for the excellent training we got from the school and we would not be where we are now if not for the people behind BCPD!
