The third of 9 children, Jasmen’s family subsisted on the vegetables her father cultivated in a small garden patch and her mother sold at a market stall. After completing 2 years of vocational training at the Banilad Institute of Professional Development in Cebu, Jasmen did her on-the-job training at Shangri-La Mactan, one of the most prestigious hotels in the Philippines. At present, Jasmen holds an important position and is a highly-paid employee in Shangri-la. Through her earnings, she has helped in the renovation of the family’s home, put up a variety store for her mother, and bought a motorcycle in order for her father to have easy transportation from the farm to the city market to sell his produce.
